Getting To Know Cord Phelps

General: One of the team's most experienced players and considered the only infielder that has locked down a starting spot for 2008, most likely at second base but he can also play shortstop or third base • A very improved player both offensively and defensively who had a great fall in 2007 • A bigger and stronger athlete who should hit for a little more power but who's strength is simply hitting the ball hard in the gaps • An above average runner • A switch hitter who makes excellent contact from both sides of the plate • Plays hard and aggressively.

Has a .299 (144-482) career batting average with 78 RBI and 95 runs scored in 143 games (126 starts), playing primarily at second base but also at shortstop and third base • Developed a power stroke in his junior season with 10 home runs after not hitting any in his first two years at Stanford.

As A Sophomore In 2007: Had a solid season, hitting .301 (56-186) with 29 runs scored, 15 doubles (second on the club), a team-high-tying four triples, 23 RBI, a team-high 22 walks, two hit by pitches, three sacrifice flies and one sacrifice bunt • One of three players who played in a team-high-tying 55 games with 49 coming in the starting lineup, splitting those starts between third base (22), shortstop (18) and second base (9) • Ranked fourth on the club with 15 multiple-hit games, picking up five three-hit contests • Had four multiple-RBI contests, including three twice • Fielded at a .920 clip with 16 errors in 201 defensive chances • Had a huge Pac-10 season, hitting .352 (31-88) with four doubles, one triple and nine RBI while playing in all 24 games with 21 starts • Finished the season with a red-hot career-high-tying six-game hit streak from May 19-27, going 12-for-27 (.444) with a double, triple, stolen base and five RBI during a stretch that included multiple-hit contests in each of the final three games and four times over the six-game streak.
