Stanford Men's Water Polo Lands Nine On ACWPC Academic All-America List; Claims Top Team GPA

The Stanford men's water polo team, long a dominant program in the pool, was lauded on Monday by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) for being the most dominant program in the classroom, claiming the top team grade-point average in the nation (3.34) and landing nine student-athletes on the Academic All-America list.

Four Stanford student-athletes have earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, awarded to fall sports participants who will receive one-time, nonrenewable grants of $7,500. Neftalem Araia (men's cross country), Rachel Buehler (women's soccer), Sandy Hohener (men's water polo) and Arianna Lambie (women's cross country) represent Stanford among the 58 NCAA student-athletes (29 men and 29 women) honored for the award. Stanford's four selections are the most of any institution included among the awardees.

The Stanford men's water polo team added a potent weapon to its arsenal as Head Coach John Vargas announced the signing of U.S. Youth National Team member Jacob Smith to a National Letter-Of-Intent. Smith, a graduate of Coronado High School, will make his Cardinal debut in the 2008 season.

Stanford Places Six On Water Polo All-America Teams

Six Stanford men's water polo players were recognized as All-Americans by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches. Driver Sage Wright was the lone Cardinal player to receive first-team honors, while two-meter Will Hindle-Katel was named to the second team, fellow two-meter Michael Bury earned a spot on the third team, and drivers Drac and Janson Wigo along with goalkeeper Sandy Hohener received honorable mention.
