Paye Back: Former Cardinal Returns As Assistant Coach
June 20, 2007
STANFORD, Calif.- Stanford women's basketball head coach Tara VanDerveer has announced the addition of former Cardinal Kate Paye as assistant coach, completing her staff for the 2007-08 season. Paye, a four-year letterwinner with the Cardinal from 1992-95, served as an assistant coach at San Diego State for the previous two seasons. Paye becomes the second current Cardinal assistant coach to have played collegiately for head coach Tara VanDerveer, as Bobbie Kelsey (1993-96) was hired last week to fill another assistant vacancy. "I am excited to have Kate on board as we finalize our coaching staff," said VanDerveer. "Kate will be instrumental in the development of our guards and working with that particular group will be her focus. One of her best qualities is the ability to teach, as she has a tremendous understanding of the game. She is very intelligent and upbeat, an excellent recruiter and familiar with Stanford and our program." A native of Woodside, Calif., Paye was a four-year member of the Stanford women's basketball team that claimed the national championship in 1992 and advanced to the NCAA Final Four in 1995. A three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection and two-time team captain, Paye earned her Bachelor's degree in political science from Stanford in 1995. She also graduated with distinction with both her Juris Doctorate and Master's of business administration degrees from Stanford in 2003. "I am so thrilled to return to Stanford and honored that Tara wants me to be a part of this staff," said Paye. "I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to contribute to a program that has meant so much to my life. Stanford is one of the most storied programs in women's basketball and I am excited to return to my alma mater." Prior to her second appointment at San Diego State, Paye spent the 2004-05 campaign as an assistant coach at Pepperdine, serving as the program's recruiting coordinator.
Paye left San Diego State in 1996 to play professional basketball, competing with the Seattle Reign of the ABL for three seasons (1996-98) and later with the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx and Seattle Storm from 2000-02.
