Stanford Begins 2008 NCAA Championship In Amherst, Mass.

The eighth-ranked Stanford softball team received an at-large bid to the 2008 NCAA Championships today, earning the No. 12 overall seed in the field of 64 that will compete for a national title. The Cardinal will begin play as the top seed in the regional in Amherst, Mass., squaring off with UMass (36-11), Lehigh (38-15-1) and Princeton (25-22) for a regional title.

In a showdown for third place in the Pac-10, the No. 8/8 Cardinal softball team was unable to conquer the defending national champion and ninth-ranked Arizona Wildcats. After jumping out to an early lead, the Cardinal allowed two homeruns and three unearned runs to drop a 6-1 decision.

Senior Michelle Smith stepped up with her third strong performance of the weekend, cracking the game-winning hit and nabbing both of Stanford's RBI in a 2-1 win over Oregon State today at OSU Softball Complex in Corvallis. With the win, the No. 8/8 Cardinal completed a season sweep of the Beavers, and remains tied for third place entering the final weekend of Pac-10 play.
