Stanford Athletics provides Training Table, a meal, in accordance with NCAA rules to all of it’s head count sports, Football, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Women’s Gymnastics, Women’s Tennis and Women’s Volleyball. These sports have scholarships that are at the full-ride value – everyone on aid is on a full scholarship. These sports represent only 17 percent of the entire student-athlete population. Of the students in this population, only one third actually live in dorms or residences where either university dining services or eating clubs serve meals.
Training Table is provided for one meal per day, six days a week allowing the students to eat in their regular dorm, house or off campus residence for the other two meals a day. The training table program was carefully created to make sure that it matched Stanford’s philosophy of not segregating its’ student-athletes from the student population.
Currently, Training Table is provided at two locations, Branner Hall and The Sports Café. These locations serve different meals at different times for different sports.
The training table meals served are generally provided at a time and in proximity so that after practice activities the students are guaranteed to get a full, hot meal in sufficient amounts to fuel their physical activities. For the majority of the student-athletes though, they eat in the dorms where the services have improved year after year both in quality of the food as well as the times it’s offered.
